Transparency international PNG (TIPNG) and the Legal Training Institute (LTI) of PNG have now embarked on an exciting new partnership, which aims to bolster corruption complaints desk operations, while also offering a dynamic learning environment for aspiring PNG lawyers to hone their practice.
With the signing of an official Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today (October 14, 2020), TIPNG is now opening its doors to selected LTI students for the duration of their Legal Aid and Work Placement Courses from 2020 to 2025.
While the MOU sets the framework for work-placement and training which will contribute to student assessment, students will also be given the opportunity during this time to assist the TIPNG Anti-Corruption Help Desk (AnCoHD) in providing legal aid to victim and witnesses of corruption around PNG.
TIPNG Chief Executive Officer, Arianne Kassman highlighted during the official signing today that the MoU now presents an exciting opportunity to expand the active network against corruption in PNG, but also ensure the delivery of quality legal service to AnCoHD clients (victims, witnesses and whistle blowers of corruption) in PNG communities.
“We are always excited to explore new partnerships and to expand the networks against corruption in PNG. I believe the opportunity to engage LTI trained practitioners will be a massive boost to our legal advice and referral capabilities, and we are more than happy to assist them in providing and facilitating this partnership to supplement their individual learning experiences,” said Ms Kassman.
“Through this program we also hope to reinforce positive civic values and awareness among participants, in the hope that they might carry these values into other facets of their lives. In their respective communities and through their practice,” she said.
The current TIPNG partnership with the LTI further supplements an existing partnership with the University of PNG Law School, which also aims to bolster TIPNG’s capacity to offer Legal internship Program to Law Students.
