Since independence in 1975, Papua New Guinea (PNG) has established a robust democracy and strong institutions of government.

With its vision to protect the integrity of the nation, the Papua New Guinea chapter of Transparency International (TI) is raising public awareness of the adverse effects on society of dishonesty and mismanagement. With the support of its coalition partners, TI PNG aims to curtail corruption and build a just society.

The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is that good people do nothing

About PNG

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of the most beautiful and amazing countries in the world, with human and biological diversity unparalleled by any other place.

We're a young country with rapidly developing political institutions. There are many challenges ahead for Papua New Guinea, but given the energy and goodwill of its people and elected representatives, PNG will one day take its rightful place amongst the most livable places in the world.

Successful Reform in PNG

There are many good news stories in Papua New Guinea when it comes to the reform of public institutions. The PNG Ombudsman Commission is an independent constitutional agency that has stood the test of time (and many challenges) to continue to serve its purpose as holding the PNG public sector to account.

The PNG Superannuation industry, after a corruption-induced crisis in the mid to late ‘90s, is now a thriving and transparent contributor to a burgeoning PNG financial sector. The Central Bank of PNG is now an independent institution that has enabled PNG to dramatically reduce inflation whilst maintaining macroeconomic integrity and stability. The PNG government have now made a statement on corruption . We would like to work with them towards the 2007 elections to ensure that PNG continues to make inroads to strengthen the National Integrity System.

PNG’s National Integrity System

Transparency International uses the National Integrity System framework as its strategic framework for action. A report was undertaken in 2003 regarding the National Integrity System of PNG. TI PNG is investigating how to undertake another status report of the National Integrity System for 2006. CLICK HERE to read the report.
